Vitalik Buterin Sees AI Becoming a New Interface for Ethereum Transactions
Vitalik Buterin said AI could increasingly execute complex on-chain operations, including tasks that now require web interfaces. He made the comments on Oct. 6, saying AI can break sandboxes, attack websites, discover software vulnerabilities, and assist Ethereum developers with bug detection and formal verification.
Buterin said he updated ENS information about a month ago without using a user interface. Instead, he asked a local AI agent to write a script, completing the task in about five minutes. He expects similar AI-driven blockchain operations to become increasingly routine as agents gain stronger abilities in coding, cryptography, and verification.
However, direct AI access to wallets and blockchain systems also creates new security risks. Buterin has previously highlighted prompt injection and the need for human controls around local AI agents. Ethereum has also been expanding AI-assisted formal verification as part of its broader security strategy.
Why it matters
AI agents could simplify blockchain use by replacing complex interfaces with natural-language or automated workflows. They could also introduce new attack surfaces, making AI security increasingly important for ETH users and developers.
