Ripple CEO Blames Democratic Politics After CLARITY Act Senate Failure
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse criticized Democratic politics after the U.S. Senate blocked the CLARITY Act on Tuesday. Senators voted 49-50 against advancing the crypto market structure bill, which needed 60 votes to proceed. Garlinghouse said the outcome left consumers and U.S. competitiveness behind.
The CLARITY Act sought to establish clearer federal rules for digital assets and define regulatory responsibilities. Democratic senators opposed the measure largely over ethics safeguards involving President Donald Trump’s crypto interests. Four Republicans also voted against advancing the bill, adding to the bipartisan resistance.
Garlinghouse said Ripple would conduct a post-mortem on why negotiations failed. He also said the setback does not change XRP’s existing legal position. Ripple says XRP already has established regulatory clarity, while the broader crypto industry still lacks a durable statutory framework. Attention may now shift toward rulemaking by the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Why it matters
The failed vote delays broader U.S. crypto market rules and keeps regulatory uncertainty in place. For investors, future SEC and CFTC actions could become more important.
