Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade launches on Sepolia testnet

Ethereum Glamsterdam

Ethereum activated its Glamsterdam upgrade on the Sepolia testnet Tuesday, marking a major rehearsal for the protocol’s planned scaling changes. The upgrade went live at 13:53:36 UTC at epoch 353,024, according to the Ethereum Foundation.

Glamsterdam combines execution and consensus-layer changes designed to increase Ethereum’s capacity. Its main features include enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists, which can help clients process block data more efficiently. The Sepolia test also targets a 200 million gas limit, up from 60 million, allowing developers to study larger blocks and higher workloads. However, the 200 million setting remains a test configuration and is not a commitment for Ethereum mainnet.

The Sepolia activation is one of the final major public rehearsals before broader deployment. Ethereum has not yet set activation dates for the Hoodi testnet or mainnet. Developers will use the test to assess network stability, client performance and application compatibility before deciding the next steps.

Why it matters

A successful test could strengthen Ethereum's path toward greater transaction capacity and more efficient block processing. For ETH markets, the key catalyst remains a confirmed mainnet deployment.
