Binance Reports $6.3 Billion Crypto Hack, Freezes $3 Billion in Assets
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, reported a security breach on October 29, 2026, with an estimated $6.3 billion impact. The incident could become the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while investigating unauthorized transactions. The exchange said customer funds remain safe and pledged to cover hacking losses.
Binance’s preliminary investigation suggests attackers compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop, gaining access to internal systems and initiating unauthorized withdrawals. The company reported no evidence that wallet private keys were exposed. Meanwhile, Binance and industry partners froze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle blocked more than $2.3 billion combined. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking group, although investigations remain ongoing.
The breach triggered sharp declines across cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin dropped more than 3% to approximately $76,368, while Ethereum fell to around $2,178. Binance-linked BNB declined roughly 5%. Shares of Coinbase and Strategy also weakened. Security researchers warned that the incident could intensify scrutiny of centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and their custody systems.
Why it matters
The breach raises concerns about cryptocurrency custody, exchange security, and investor confidence. Binance's ability to recover assets and cover losses could influence broader market sentiment.
