Switzerland Approves First Retail Bitcoin ETF as FINMA Eases Diversification Rules
Switzerland’s financial regulator FINMA approved the country’s first retail Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) on October 20, 2026. The decision allows ordinary investors to access a regulated investment fund that holds Bitcoin directly. FINMA classified the product as an “other fund for alternative investments” under Swiss law. The regulator also granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements, allowing the fund to concentrate its investments in Bitcoin.
FINMA justified the exemption by citing Bitcoin’s relatively long trading history and substantial trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies. Switzerland previously approved a cryptocurrency investment fund for qualified investors in 2021. However, the latest authorization extends regulated Bitcoin fund access to retail investors. FINMA also confirmed that other fund providers have submitted or announced applications for similar products.
Despite relaxing diversification requirements, FINMA emphasized strict investor protections. Supervised institutions must address operational and custody risks while providing clear disclosures about volatility and potential losses. Financial service providers must also follow Swiss Financial Services Act requirements, including suitability assessments. The regulator warned that Bitcoin remains highly volatile and investors could lose substantial capital, even through an approved ETF.
Why it matters
The approval expands regulated cryptocurrency investment options for Swiss retail investors. It could also encourage additional Bitcoin ETF launches across Switzerland's financial market.
