Amazon Weighs $7 Billion Acquisition of AI Startup Decart
Amazon is in talks to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart in a deal valued at around $7 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Sunday, October 11. The potential acquisition would expand Amazon’s AI capabilities as technology companies compete to secure advanced computing infrastructure and software.
Founded in 2023, Decart develops AI models and software designed to support different computing applications. Its Lucy model can edit live video in real time, while its Oasis model generates simulated environments for training and testing robotics and autonomous-driving systems. The startup was valued at nearly $4 billion in May, according to PitchBook data cited in the report. Decart also raised $300 million in a funding round led by Radical Ventures, with Nvidia participating as a new investor.
Amazon’s interest comes as it advances its own AI chip development, including Trainium3. The company reportedly gave Decart early access to its chip technology in 2025. Meanwhile, Anthropic considered acquiring Decart in a potential $6 billion transaction before abandoning those plans in September. Reuters said it could not independently verify the latest acquisition report. Amazon and Decart did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Why it matters
The reported deal highlights Amazon's efforts to strengthen its AI technology and computing infrastructure. A transaction at this valuation would also underscore intensifying competition among major technology companies for specialized AI capabilities.
