Airtel Money Lists in London at £5.3 Billion Valuation

Airtel Money, Airtel Africa’s digital financial services unit, began conditional trading on the London Stock Exchange on Friday at an implied valuation of £5.3 billion. Priced at £1.96 per share, the debut was subdued. Shares initially rose to £2.00 before falling to £1.93, below the offer price.

The offering involved 270 million existing shares and raised about £529 million for selling shareholders. Airtel Money did not issue new shares, so the transaction brought no fresh capital directly into the business. Parent Airtel Africa, majority-owned by India’s Bharti Enterprises, remains the controlling shareholder.

Founded in 2011, the platform serves approximately 53 million monthly active users across 13 African countries and has a network of more than 2.3 million agents. Unconditional trading is scheduled to begin on October 14. The listing ranks among London’s largest IPOs in five years, offering a closely watched test of investor appetite for new listings in the city.

Why it matters

The listing gives investors direct exposure to Africa's expanding digital financial services market while offering London a significant new flotation. However, the muted debut highlights the challenge of sustaining investor demand after an IPO.
