What the index means
The fear and greed index blends volatility, trading volume, social chatter, Bitcoin's share of the market and search trends into one score. Very low readings mean investors are scared and often selling into weakness; very high readings mean euphoria, when prices can run ahead of reality.
It is a mood gauge, not a forecast. Extreme fear has historically appeared near market bottoms and extreme greed near tops, but the index can stay extreme for weeks. Read it next to the price action and the day's news rather than on its own.
