SpaceX Targets 2-3 Year Starlink Mobile Rollout Despite Verizon’s Warning

Elon Musk challenged Verizon’s assessment of SpaceX’s wireless ambitions on October 26, saying Starlink Mobile could build its U.S. carrier network in two to three years. His response followed comments from Verizon CEO Dan Schulman, who estimated that building a competitive nationwide network would require four to six years and $300 billion to $500 billion in investment.

During Verizon’s third-quarter earnings call, Schulman argued that satellite connectivity alone cannot match traditional cellular networks in densely populated areas. He estimated that SpaceX would need access to 65,000 to 80,000 cell sites, extensive spectrum holdings, fiber connections, and radio access infrastructure. Schulman also warned that building such a network would offer no fundamental cost advantage over established carriers.

Meanwhile, SpaceX has been expanding its telecommunications strategy through spectrum acquisitions and negotiations with cellular infrastructure providers. Bloomberg previously reported that the company was seeking access to approximately 80,000 U.S. cell sites. Musk rejected Verizon’s construction timeline but did not provide an alternative investment estimate. The competing projections highlight uncertainty surrounding Starlink Mobile’s potential challenge to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Why it matters

Starlink Mobile could reshape competition in the U.S. telecommunications industry, potentially pressuring established carriers' pricing and market share. Investors will closely monitor infrastructure spending, network deployment, and spectrum acquisitions.
