Zcash targets Nov. 5 for NU7 upgrade with 25-second blocks

Zcash developers are targeting Nov. 5 for the NU7 mainnet activation. The upgrade would cut block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Developers also plan to activate NU7 on testnet on Oct. 6, with a final mainnet decision scheduled for Oct. 20.

The upgrade would disable version 4 transactions and introduce the Network Sustainability Mechanism. Its selected configuration would preserve Zcash’s existing halving schedule. Previously removed supply could begin returning in February 2031. Developers expect limited wallet impact, although full nodes, indexers and block explorers may need updates.

The timeline follows a ZEC holder vote that strongly backed the proposed changes. About 99.9% of weighted votes supported 25-second blocks, while 98.9% favored keeping the halving schedule. Developers will assess testnet performance before confirming the mainnet activation height.

Why it matters

Faster blocks could reduce confirmation waiting times, while preserved halvings maintain Zcash's planned issuance structure. The October testing period remains a key milestone for ZEC and network operators.
