UK Names Six Banks to Lead First Digital Gilt Pilot in 2027
HM Treasury appointed Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets as joint lead managers for DIGIT on Oct. 6. The UK’s first digitally native government bond is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
The appointment completes the procurement process and allows investor engagement to begin. DIGIT will be short-dated and issued through HSBC’s Orion platform within the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox. It will use distributed ledger technology for issuance and onchain settlement, while remaining separate from the government’s main debt management program.
Meanwhile, HSBC and London Stock Exchange Group are developing a link between their digital securities infrastructure. The UK also plans to list DIGIT as the first digital asset on the LSEG main market. The pilot will test whether DLT can support sovereign debt markets and encourage wider adoption of digital financial infrastructure.
Why it matters
The pilot could provide a major test of blockchain-based sovereign debt infrastructure. Its results may influence how investors and financial institutions approach tokenized bonds.
