Tencent Secures 100,000 Oracle Chips in $7 Billion AI Push
Tencent has agreed to a five-year lease giving it access to about 100,000 advanced AI chips, the Financial Times reported Wednesday. The chips will operate across multiple Oracle data centers in Southeast Asia. The deal is estimated at about $7 billion, with roughly 30% paid upfront. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.
The agreement marks Tencent’s largest overseas chip lease as the Chinese technology group expands its AI infrastructure. Advanced chips remain difficult to obtain in China amid tighter U.S. export restrictions and Beijing’s push for domestic alternatives. Tencent has also been developing large language models and expanding AI tools across its products.
The spending comes as Tencent accelerates its AI strategy. The company recently released a preview of an AI image-generation model for professional creators. Meanwhile, its Hunyuan models and AI agents are becoming more central to its product ecosystem. Tencent and Oracle did not immediately comment on the reported deal.
Why it matters
The deal highlights intense demand for AI computing capacity and creates a major new infrastructure commitment for Tencent and Oracle.
