SoftBank completes final $30 billion OpenAI investment tranche
SoftBank Group completed the final $10 billion tranche of its planned $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI on October 1. The payment, made through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, completes the three-tranche commitment announced in February. SoftBank’s cumulative investment in OpenAI now totals $64.6 billion, giving it an approximately 13% ownership stake.
The latest investment comes as SoftBank expands its exposure to artificial intelligence. OpenAI secured $122 billion in commitments earlier this year at an $852 billion valuation, with Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank among the major investors. SoftBank funded the final tranche with proceeds from a $11.1 billion foreign-currency bond sale completed in September.
SoftBank also canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under a $40 billion bridge facility. The company said all borrowings under that facility have now been repaid. The completed investment further ties SoftBank’s balance sheet and strategy to OpenAI and the broader AI infrastructure buildout.
Why it matters
The transaction reinforces SoftBank's large financial exposure to OpenAI and the wider AI investment cycle. Investors will continue to watch how that exposure affects SoftBank's financing and valuation.
