OpenAI Unveils Dots Agents as Enterprise AI Competition Intensifies
OpenAI unveiled Dots on September 29 as always-on AI agents for business users. The agents can pursue goals across connected applications with limited human oversight. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, Dots can use their own cloud computers and browsers to complete multistep tasks. They can also connect with more than 4,000 applications and work through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams.
The launch deepens OpenAI’s competition with Meta, which recently introduced its Muse AI agent. OpenAI is initially targeting Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise customers, while Meta has expanded Muse toward small businesses. Dots can monitor projects, research information, prepare documents, and handle software tasks in the background. OpenAI also gives users permission controls and custom rules for consequential actions.
The move reflects a broader shift in enterprise AI from conversational chatbots toward autonomous software agents. OpenAI said Dots can eventually operate in teams, potentially allowing multiple agents to collaborate on business workflows. However, Reuters reported technical glitches during live demonstrations, underscoring reliability concerns as companies adopt more autonomous systems.
Why it matters
Autonomous agents could change how companies buy and use business software. Greater adoption would also increase competition among AI providers for enterprise spending.
