Microsoft’s 13 Million-Follower X Account Hijacked to Promote Clippy Token
Microsoft’s official X account was compromised Thursday and used to promote an unauthorized Clippy-themed cryptocurrency. The account, which has more than 13 million followers, followed a Clippy crypto account, reposted one of its messages, and changed its profile image to Clippy. Microsoft removed the posts after the incident, which lasted roughly 30 minutes.
The compromised account promoted a token presented as $Clippy, with another account claiming its liquidity pool was paired with $MSFT. Microsoft later confirmed unauthorized access and said the account had been secured. The company also said the posts did not come from Microsoft and that it was investigating the breach.
Microsoft separately stated that it did not authorize, sponsor, endorse, or approve any cryptocurrency associated with Clippy, Microsoft, or $MSFT. The company said it would pursue legal action to remove the unauthorized token and related materials.
Why it matters
Compromised social accounts can give fraudulent tokens instant credibility and reach. Crypto users should not treat posts from verified corporate accounts as proof of token legitimacy.
