Italy antitrust opens probe into Suno over AI music contract terms

Italy’s antitrust authority opened an investigation Tuesday into AI music startup Suno over potentially unfair consumer terms. The watchdog said the clauses could create a significant imbalance between users‘ rights and obligations under Italian consumer law.

The authority flagged Suno’s ability to change contracts, services and subscription prices without a stated justification. It also questioned provisions allowing account suspension or termination without notice. Meanwhile, regulators raised concerns about Suno’s broad content license and its requirement that users waive moral rights, which may conflict with Italian copyright law.

Suno’s terms also require U.S. arbitration, waive class-action rights and designate Massachusetts as the exclusive jurisdiction for disputes. Suno was not immediately available for comment. The Italian regulator plans to open a public consultation in the coming weeks, allowing consumer groups and business associations to participate.

Why it matters

The probe adds regulatory pressure on AI platforms over consumer contracts and copyright rights. It could also influence how global AI startups structure terms for European users.
