HSBC Names Hong Kong Stablecoin RedCoin for 3.3 Million PayMe Users

HSBC has named its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin, targeting more than 3.3 million PayMe users. The bank plans to launch it before year-end through PayMe and its Hong Kong mobile banking app.

The initial rollout will support peer-to-peer transfers and person-to-merchant payments. HSBC plans to expand RedCoin into corporate and institutional applications later. The stablecoin will be redeemable 1:1 for Hong Kong dollars and backed by high-quality, highly liquid assets held in segregated accounts. HSBC received one of Hong Kong’s first stablecoin issuer licenses from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in April.

Meanwhile, HSBC said a survey of 1,060 customers found 74% recognized at least one stablecoin use case. P2P transfers ranked among the most recognized applications, while merchant payments and cross-border remittances also drew significant interest. HSBC has not yet issued RedCoin, and it has not announced a specific launch date or blockchain network.

Why it matters

RedCoin gives regulated stablecoin payments a direct route into a large banking and payments ecosystem. Its rollout could provide a significant test of stablecoins for everyday transactions.
