Banco Master Scandal Deepens Brazil’s Supreme Court Crisis

Brazil (BRA) with a large outline ring accent

Brazil’s Banco Master collapse has become a major political and financial crisis ahead of October’s presidential election. The central bank liquidated the lender in November 2025 after regulators and investigators uncovered serious financial problems. The fallout has affected hundreds of thousands of depositors, while Brazil’s credit guarantee fund has paid billions of reais to protected creditors.

The scandal has now reached the Supreme Court. Justice André Mendonça released police material alleging contacts between former Banco Master owner Daniel Vorcaro and Justice Alexandre de Moraes. A law firm owned by Moraes’ wife also held a consulting contract worth about $24 million with the bank. Moraes denies wrongdoing and has challenged Mendonça’s handling of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the dispute has become an election issue. Right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has used the allegations to attack Moraes and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Flávio Bolsonaro is also under investigation over alleged financial links to Vorcaro, which he denies. The Supreme Court is due to consider whether to investigate Moraes, although immediate action remains uncertain.

Why it matters

The case could pressure confidence in Brazil's financial oversight and institutions. Investors are also watching whether the political conflict increases broader market uncertainty.
