Akamai Signs $11.6 Billion Anthropic Deal With $20 Billion Potential
Akamai Technologies signed a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud computing agreement with Anthropic on September 24. The deal supports Anthropic’s growing CPU workload demand through Akamai Cloud’s distributed infrastructure. The agreement could expand by another $9 billion, taking its potential value to about $20 billion.
The contract follows a broader push by Anthropic to secure computing capacity as demand for its Claude AI services grows. Akamai expects the agreement to require about $5.5 billion in capital spending. The company plans to increase 2026 capital expenditures by about $1.7 billion to secure components, including memory.
Akamai also issued Anthropic a warrant covering up to about 5% of its outstanding common stock. About 2% could vest under the initial commitment, while the remaining 3% depends on expansion of the agreement. Reuters reported that Akamai shares gained sharply in extended trading after the announcement.
Why it matters
The agreement highlights rising infrastructure spending behind generative AI services. For investors, it also shows how AI demand is creating large new contracts for cloud infrastructure providers.
